National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Agricultural Centers were established as part of a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) / NIOSH Agricultural Health and Safety Initiative in 1990. The CDC, through NIOSH, has awarded the University of Florida’s College of Public Health and Health Professions, a grant of nearly $10 million for a five-year project to create the Southeastern Coastal Center for Agricultural Health and Safety (SCCAHS), which will become part of a national network of ten other centers. These agricultural health and safety centers conduct research, education, and prevention projects to address the health and safety issues in the agriculture, forestry, fishing industries. The Centers are distributed geographically throughout the nation in order to be responsive to unique needs that arise in different regions.
