SCCAHS Researcher Receives University of Florida Office of Research Award

Gulcan Onel, a Principal Investigator of an SCCAHS Pilot Award, was recently named a recipient of the 2018 Research Opportunity Seed Fund Awards, a grant funded by the UF Office of Research.

Onel, an assistant professor of food and resource economics at the University of Florida, was one of 16 recipients to receive the University-wide competitive award.

Southeastern Coastal Center for Agricultural Health and Safety Advisory Board Meeting at the Florida Farm Bureau on Thursday, March 15th, 2018.

Onel received the award for her project “Implications of Shifting Migration Trends: Comparative Assessment of Social Networks, Health Status, and Productivity of Hispanic and Non-Hispanic Migrant Farm Workers.”

In late 2017, Onel received a pilot research award from the SCCAHS to investigate the extent to which migrant farmworkers with different ethnic backgrounds and social networks face higher risks of mental, physical and occupational health issues.

“The preliminary data from our SCCAHS pilot project with Dr. Jeanne-Marie Stacciarini and Dr. Antonio Tovar-Aguilar motivated us to broaden the scope of the research,” Onel said. “ Cross-cultural differences in social, health, and economic statuses are poorly understood in non-Hispanic migrant communities. We are hopeful that our research can identify these differences and be used to develop improved support tools for immigrant farmworkers in Florida.”
